Sociology definition

Cultural Meanings

Cultural meanings are the shared interpretations, symbols, and understandings through which members of a society make sense of objects, actions, events, and relationships, giving them significance beyond their physical or practical features. They are learned through socialization and communicated through language, ritual, media, and everyday practice. Max Weber argued that sociology must grasp the subjective meanings that actors attach to their conduct, while Clifford Geertz, drawing on the image of man as an animal suspended in webs of significance, proposed that culture is best studied through thick description of public symbols. George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer developed symbolic interactionism, which holds that people act toward things on the basis of the meanings they have for them, and that these meanings arise through interaction. Emile Durkheim analyzed collective representations as the shared ideas that sustain solidarity. Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann showed how meanings become objectivated and taken for granted in the social construction of reality, and Stuart Hall examined how meanings are encoded and decoded in media. Pierre Bourdieu highlighted that symbolic meanings are tied to power and class. Cultural meanings remain central to research on identity, communication, ritual, consumption, and social change.
