Assimilationist Ideology
Assimilationist Ideology is a belief system advocating for the integration of minority or marginalized groups into the dominant cultural, social, or political framework of a society. This ideology emphasizes conformity to the norms, values, and practices of the majority group, often at the expense of the distinct identities and traditions of minority groups. Assimilationist ideology assumes that societal cohesion is best achieved when minority groups abandon their cultural uniqueness in favor of uniformity with the dominant group. Sociologists critique this ideology for perpetuating cultural erasure, systemic inequality, and exclusion by marginalizing diversity and failing to address structural power imbalances. While assimilationist practices may reduce overt discrimination, they often undermine multiculturalism and equity by reinforcing dominant group privilege over genuine inclusivity and acceptance.
