Affluenza

Affluenza refers to a social condition characterized by materialism, overconsumption, and an insatiable desire for wealth, often at the expense of emotional well-being and social values. Rooted in affluent societies, affluenza manifests as stress, dissatisfaction, and disconnection, despite access to material abundance. Sociologists use the term to critique the cultural emphasis on consumerism and its negative effects on mental health, family dynamics, and community cohesion. It highlights the paradox where greater wealth and material possessions fail to produce corresponding levels of happiness or fulfillment. Affluenza also addresses broader societal issues, including environmental degradation and economic inequality, as excessive consumption strains natural resources and perpetuates social divides. Understanding affluenza helps sociologists explore how cultural values and economic systems shape individual behaviors and collective societal outcomes.
