Absorption Effect

Absorption Effect refers to the phenomenon where the presence or actions of one group or individual absorbs the attention, resources, or influence that would otherwise be distributed more widely within a social context. This concept is often used in sociological studies to describe how dominant groups or well-established social movements can inadvertently or deliberately draw public focus away from smaller, emerging groups or issues. The absorption effect highlights how power dynamics in society impact visibility, resource allocation, and influence. For example, in media coverage, major political parties or dominant cultural narratives often absorb attention, marginalizing alternative voices or movements. Sociologists study the absorption effect to understand how social inequalities are maintained and how emerging groups struggle for recognition and resources in competitive environments.
