Heteronormativity
Heteronormativity is the belief that heterosexuality is the default or natural sexual orientation, positioning other identities as deviations. It involves societal norms that assume alignment between biological sex, gender identity, and sexual desire, privileging heterosexual, cisgender experiences. Heteronormativity is embedded in cultural institutions, laws, and everyday practices, often marginalizing LGBTQ+ individuals by upholding rigid gender roles and expectations. In sociology, heteronormativity is examined to understand how power operates through cultural norms to maintain the dominance of certain sexual identities while subjugating others. It shapes social interactions, relationships, and media representations, reinforcing ideas about what constitutes “normal” family structures and behaviors. Challenging heteronormativity is key to creating an inclusive society that recognizes and respects diverse sexual and gender identities.
