Alterity
Alterity refers to the concept of “otherness,” highlighting the differences between individuals or groups and how these distinctions are socially and culturally constructed. In sociology, alterity examines how dominant groups define marginalized groups as “the Other,” reinforcing social hierarchies and power dynamics. This process of othering often perpetuates stereotypes, exclusion, and discrimination. Alterity is also central to identity formation, as understanding the “self” is often framed in contrast to the “other.” The term is widely used in post-colonial studies, where colonized populations are depicted as fundamentally different to justify dominance and exploitation. Sociologists and cultural theorists analyze alterity to explore how social boundaries are created and maintained, and how they shape cultural diversity, prejudice, and inclusion. By studying alterity, scholars uncover mechanisms that sustain inequality and challenge dominant narratives about identity and belonging.
