Authority

Authority refers to the legitimate power or right to make decisions, enforce rules, and command obedience within a social structure. In sociology, authority is categorized into three types, as outlined by Max Weber: traditional (rooted in customs and traditions), charismatic (based on personal qualities of a leader), and rational-legal (derived from established laws and procedures). Authority is distinct from power, as it is recognized as rightful and acceptable by those over whom it is exercised. Sociologists study authority to understand its role in maintaining social order, institutional stability, and power dynamics. Authority is critical in analyzing relationships within families, governments, organizations, and other social systems.
