Appropriation

Appropriation in sociology refers to the act of taking or using elements of a culture, identity, or group, often without permission or proper understanding. Cultural appropriation, a common form, involves the adoption of symbols, practices, or traditions by a dominant group from a marginalized group, often stripping them of context or meaning. This process can perpetuate power imbalances, commodify cultural heritage, and reinforce systemic inequality. Appropriation is studied to examine its role in identity, cultural exchange, and the reinforcement of social hierarchies. Sociologists explore the differences between appropriation, appreciation, and authentic exchange to address its ethical and societal implications.
